Inverse simulation
Inverse simulation consists of determining the time histories of pilot inputs that make the helicopter fly either a prescribed trajectory, or a trajectory with desired characteristics. The main objectives of this research activity are:
  • To develop novel inverse simulation methodologies, generally based on numerical optimization techniques; and
  • To apply these methodologies to the study of helicopter handling qualities.

We have recently presented the results of the application of inverse simulation techniques to the study of "Mission-Task-Elements" (MTE) of the ADS-33 helicopter handling qualities specification (download the paper). Through inverse simulation, we assess the compliance of a helicopter with some of the performance requirements of the Pullup/Pushover MTE and of the Roll Reversal MTE.
